Funding for the Leibniz Institute for Resilience Research is to continue
The Leibniz Institute for Resilience Research (LIR) in Mainz performed very well in its first regular evaluation in 2025. Approximately seven years after joining the Leibniz Association, the institute underwent its first regular evaluation by international experts—with results ranging from very good to excellent. The Senate of the Leibniz Association recommends that the federal and state governments continue their joint funding.
The evaluators emphasize that the institute has established an independent and internationally visible research profile in recent years. Particularly positive assessments were given for the institute’s contribution to the international establishment of the concept of resilience, the expansion of bioinformatics methods, and the strengthening of the neurostimulation research area. At the institute itself, the positive evaluation is seen as confirmation of its development to date. At the same time, those in charge view it as a mandate to further expand research. In the future, the focus will be on strengthening the transfer of basic knowledge into concrete applications—that is, translation—such as in the development of preventive measures against stress-related mental illnesses.
Another priority is the promotion of early-career researchers as well as closer networking between research, practice, and policy. Structural developments, such as greater consolidation of research activities, are also planned.
The evaluation of Leibniz Association institutions by independent experts takes place regularly every seven years and is considered an important benchmark for scientific quality and strategic orientation.
